It takes only a second to post an opinion. Sometimes a second is enough. Other times, especially when we are upset, a short pause changes what we say and how well we say it.
Before posting, I like three questions: Am I describing what I know, or what I assume? Would I say this to the person in a room? And what do I actually want to happen after someone reads it?
Keep the point, lose the heat
Pausing does not mean watering down an honest opinion. It can make the point stronger. Specific examples are more useful than sweeping claims, and questions can invite people into a conversation instead of daring them to fight.
Clarity usually lasts longer than a quick reaction.
We can still be funny, direct, and passionate. We can also correct ourselves when new facts appear. That is how a good conversation keeps moving.
